Burma Debate
During a debate on Burma, Brooks Newmark calls for more efforts to try to get the Chinese to put pressure on the Burmese regime.
Mr. Brooks Newmark (Braintree) (Con): My hon. Friend is talking about engagement, but would it not be best to talk to our friends in the Chinese embassy in this country to try to get the Chinese Government to put pressure on the Burmese regime, with which it has a close relationship?
Mr. Evans: I am grateful for my hon. Friend's comments. There is no doubt that China is a superpower and has an influential role to play. I believe that it abdicates its responsibility when it fails to do so. I hope that in the coming months, we will see China play a more positive role in trying to ensure that Aung San Suu Kyi and the other political prisoners are released in Burma.
