Brooks congratulates local students on winning a Giving Nation Award

At a ceremony at Westminster on Wednesday 15th October Brooks Newmark congratulated students from the Alec Hunter Humanities College on winning a 2008 Giving Nation Award.At a ceremony at Westminster on Wednesday 15th October Brooks Newmark congratulated students from the Alec Hunter Humanities College on winning a 2008 Giving Nation Award.

Giving Nation is a Citizenship Foundation project which promotes and supports young people's learning and engagement in charity and community volunteering, fundraising, social enterprise and campaigning.

The students from Alec Hunter travelled to Westminster to receive their award in front of an audience of MPs, representatives from the DCSF, Office of the Third Sector, major charities and partners of the Citizenship Foundation.

Alec Hunter beat off competition from the whole of the south-east to be named regional winners, receiving an award of £1,000 for excelling in charitable and community activities over the past 12 months and to assist them in their future charitable work at Alec Hunter. The students also received individual vouchers of £15 to make a donation to their own charities of choice.

Brooks says, ‘it was a pleasure to watch the students from Alec Hunter being rewarded for all their hard work and dedication to charitable work, winning in the particularly competitive category of London and the south-east. I find it especially encouraging to see the young people of our area putting something back into the local community.’

Brooks adds, ‘The success of the students is not only a testament to their personal commitment to charitable work, but also to the vibrant teaching of the Citizenship department at Alec Hunter. I understand the students had a very busy and eventful day in London, and I look forward to hearing of another successful entry in the Giving Nation Awards next year.’
