Brooks said, "I was delighted to meet with the two officers who wanted to see me, although I regret that it was necessary for them to come to London in these circumstances. The Home Secretary's failure to honour the arbitration pay aware has done serious damage to police morale and amounts to a betrayal of trust.
"Our communities all rely on the dedicated service of police officers and they deserve full recognition for that, not a partial recognition, or a staged recognition. In 18 years of Conservative Government we were able to stick to arbitration awards. If we were in Government we would require a clear vote from the House of Commons before the Home Secretary could ignore an arbitration pay award.
"Gordon Brown's fiscal irresponsibility and waste has meant that the Government has simply run out of money, with police officers and other key workers now paying the price."
