Brooks presents local 'heroes' with award
Yesterday, Brooks Newmark MP joined MPs from across England at an event to celebrate the outstanding achievements of older volunteers.The 9th annual MP Heroes Tea Party was held at the Houses of Parliament, where Brooks presented Mr. Peter Brown MBE and Mrs. Janet Brown, with their 'heroes' award.
Each year MPs are given the opportunity to present an MP Heroes Award to a senior citizen in their constituency whom they feel has worked hard to make a difference through their contribution to the local community.
This year, Brooks nominated the married couple of Peter and Janet Brown to be the local 'heroes' of Braintree and Witham, for their many years spent tirelessly running the local Mencap branch in Braintree, as President and Chairman respectively. Braintree Mencap was established over 50 years ago, and now offers support to over 800 adults and children in the Braintree District who have a learning disability, along with their families and carers.
Brooks says, "I was very pleased to present Peter and Janet with their joint 'heroes' award - indeed it is a testament to the tireless work they have done together over the years for Mencap that it was impossible to choose just one of them for this award. Every time I drop into Mencap I am continually impressed by Peter and Janet's dedication and their unstinting efforts to improve the lives of those locally living with learning disabilities.
I think it is particularly fitting that Peter and Janet have received this award during Learning Disabilities Week, which is run by Mencap to raise awareness about the issues affecting people with a learning disability, their families and carers.
As a society we owe a lot to individuals like Peter and Janet, and I think it is important that they receive the recognition and appreciation they deserve. They set an excellent example to the rest of us of what we could all be doing to improve the lives of others in the community."
The MP Heroes Awards are organised by the Experience Corps, a company which brokers relationships between people, the private and public sectors.
