Brooks Newmark has been promoted to the key position of Opposition Treasury Whip in the House of Commons. Braintree's MP, Brooks Newmark, has been promoted to the key position of Opposition Treasury Whip in the House of Commons. Mr. Newmark's promotion follows eighteen months of service as a Member of the Treasury Select Committee, which is responsible for scrutinising the Government's economic policy.
Whips are the senior party managers in the House of Commons responsible for managing and negotiating Bills with Government Ministers and the Speaker of the House of Commons. Brooks will be responsible for managing legislation and other parliamentary business which falls within the remit of the Treasury Team.
Brooks said: "I am delighted to have received this promotion, especially as it builds upon my existing experience and interest in taxation and economic policy. I have found my time on the Treasury Select Committee to be very rewarding and this new opportunity is a natural step for me.
Being a Whip is an important role because we are responsible for ensuring that our laws are thoroughly scrutinised and fully debated. This is a duty that is more important than ever now that Gordon Brown has taken over the helm, and it is a duty that I look forward to taking on.
